Hotels call for end to Thai-Cambodian border war as room cancellations mount

The alleged infiltration of Russian mercenaries should not affect tourism and local life in Nakhon Ratchasima, but authorities are urged to resolve the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute soon to prevent sluggish New Year travel, as some hotels have reported cancellations of more than 100 rooms since last week.

The greater concern was the renewed border conflict, as all hotel bookings in the four provinces along the border were canceled. Even though Nakhon Ratchasima is not located near the conflict zones, some hotels in the province also received cancellation requests. Continued …

10 Thai Foods You Should Try At Least Once

The first time I visited Thailand, I was blown away by the sheer abundance of tasty food at every turn. It seemed like no matter where I went, I was never far from a fiery curry, tangy soup, or bowl of springy noodles.

That first trip sparked somewhat of an obsession with Southeast Asian cuisine in me. Not long afterward, I packed my bags and moved to the region, first living in neighboring Cambodia and later in Vietnam and Indonesia. Over the course of a decade, I visited Thailand every chance I got to explore more of the country and cuisine. Continued …

Mines, rivers, and a regional crisis

“When I was a child, the Kok River and the Mekong were clear and alive. We drank directly from the river. Women and mothers gathered along the banks, hauling in fishing nets fully loaded with heavy fish, which we cooked and ate the same day. We were happy. We lived without fear – fear of toxins, fear for our health.

“Today, we can no longer use our rivers at all. That happiness is gone. Everything has changed. We live with anxiety – fear of contamination, fear of illness, fear for our children.” Continued …

Demand shifts result in national oil plan rejig

The new national oil plan (NOP), which maps out long-term oil usage for the country, is expected to have several revisions as a result of projected shifts in global oil demand, the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), and data centers, says the Department of Energy Business (DOEB).

“These changes exceed our earlier estimates,” said Sarawut Kaewtathip, chief of the DOEB, referring to ongoing work to draft a new plan. The NOP is usually based on data for peak oil demand, meaning the highest global demand in terms of oil consumption estimated by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Continued …

Why is Thai health care so good?

Political turmoil in Thailand is unrelenting. Over the past two decades, 11 different prime ministers have led the country. In the coming weeks that number could increase, as the constitutional court considers dismissing the current leader, Srettha Thavisin, over an allegedly illegal cabinet appointment. Yet amid such instability, one aspect of Thailand’s governance flourishes: its public-health system.

Thai health care is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations. Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72 million was covered by health insurance. Continued …

The Pressing Issue of Transboundary Haze in Southeast Asia

Air pollution has long been a significant health concern in Southeast Asia, with the issue of transboundary haze taking center stage in recent years. This environmental challenge knows no borders, as smoke from wildfires and land-clearing activities in one country can easily drift across national boundaries, blanketing entire regions in a thick, hazardous haze.

One of the main causes of transboundary haze pollution in the ASEAN region is peatland fires. The ASEAN region is home to 56% of the global tropical peatlands, yet more than 3 million hectares of peatlands in Southeast Asia have been destroyed by fire. Continued …

Can of Beans raises the issue of the real cost of living for foreigners in Thailand

A can of Heinz beans went viral on social media site TikTok last week. Two young tourists from Ireland and the United Kingdom expressed horror at the price tag of Bt420.

Although probably an error or mistake, it comes with a growing conflict between reports from ordinary people, including expats and Thais, about the cost of living and official Thai government data. It came in a week in which the Ministry of Commerce confirmed 0% inflation for the first six months and when June’s inflation rate was only 0.67%, defying a Reuters poll that predicted 1.13%. Thailand’s new energy roadmap: a path to eco and economic crisis?

Thailand is set to boost renewable energy used in electricity production from 36% to 51% in its latest power-development plan (PDP). Yet, many experts argue that the plan is a blueprint for failure in meeting emissions targets and ensuring energy security.

Prepared by the Energy Ministry, the PDP is the country’s master plan for power production based on forecasts of rising demand over the next 15 to 20 years. The PDP was aired at a week-long public hearing and will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval soon, said Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo, director of the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO).
