Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky?

Uh oh, it’s Friday the 13th. We’ve been told it’s a very unlucky day. So why is it so scary for us? One explanation is that Friday and the number 13 both have violent historical connections to Christianity.

It was on a Friday that Jesus was crucified, and ever since, the day has been associated with a “general ill omen,” according to Michael Bailey, a history professor at Iowa State University who specializes in the origins of superstitions. Continued …

And with a mix of quirky bars, nature spots and golden sands, there are plenty of reasons to linger in Hua Hin, too.

Arrive by train on a spectacular journey from Bangkok and you’ll pull into Thailand’s grandest train station, built during the reign of King Rama VI. Its highlight is the temple-like Royal Waiting Room, a pavilion that was relocated from Nakhon Pathom’s Sanam Chan Palace and installed to accommodate the Thai royals who started flocking to Hua Hin in the 1920s. In the latest signs of a rift between the central bank and Srettha Thavisin’s new administration, BOT officials have likened the 560-billion-baht welfare scheme to offering poisoned honey to the people. And implementing the distribution of 10,000 baht in digital money to all Thais over the age of 16 will not be as straightforward as it seems, they add. Continued …

Are economic danger signals flashing for both Thailand and the world?

On Tuesday, PM Srettha Thavisin pointed to the declining baht, saying that the Bank of Thailand was monitoring the situation and that it would help boost Thai exports and tourism. The baht has fallen 7% this year but is still higher than the rates set in October 2022 with Bangkok analysts suggesting that although it may fall to ฿37.55 to the dollar in the weeks ahead, but then recover with the high season for foreign tourism, to anywhere between ฿35 and ฿36 by the end of 2023.

However, could this year be different? In the last week alone, Thailand’s 10-year bond yields have risen 4.57% amid a similar surge in the United States, as markets have become wary of risk. This will make the government’s contentious expansionary stimulus plans for the economy more expensive in a darkening economic environment, with an implosion of the Chinese economy and market skepticism about Pheu Thai’s expansionary policies at a time when world economic danger signals are flashing.
