Twin-track railway to Chumphon fully operational ‘by August’

The Nakhon Pathom-Chumphon double-track railway will be fully operational in August, with round-the-clock service along the 421-kilometer route, Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote said.

Phetchaburi historical park to receive UNESCO push

The Ministry of Culture aims to nominate Phra Nakhon Khiri National Historical Park, aka Khao Wang, in Phetchaburi as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol.

The 165-year-old Phra Nakhon Khiri was built in the reign of King Rama IV on top of a hill as a royal summer retreat. Continued …

Thailand major source of illicit drugs smuggled into S.Korea

Thailand was the biggest single source of smuggled illicit drugs seized in South Korea last year.

The kingdom accounted for 187 kilograms of the total of 780kg, or 24%, confiscated by South Korean authorities last year, Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday, citing government data. Continued …

Second Korean suspect in barrel-murder arrested

A second South Korean suspect in the murder of a man found dead in a concrete-filled barrel in a reservoir near Pattaya has been arrested in Phnom Penh and is being handed over to Korean authorities.

Police Maj. Gen. Noppasil Poonsawat,commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said on Tuesday that Cambodian authorities had captured Lee Young Jin in the Cambodian capital on Monday. Continued …

Last of the ‘Three Tyrants’ dies at 90

Col. Narong Kittikachorn, one of the “three tyrants” who led the country prior to the October 1973 student uprising, died on Tuesday at the age of 90.
Narong was the son of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn and the son-in-law of Field Marshal Prapass Charusathiara, a former interior minister and police department director-general. Continued …

3 Lese Majeste Detainees Still On Hunger Strike As One Dies

Three detainees facing lese majeste charges are still reportedly on a hunger strike in prison, while one other was pronounced dead yesterday.

The three street activists earlier arrested and currently detained in prison under the lawsuits pertaining to lese majeste, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Code, have been fasting since earlier this year. The trio are reported among at least 41 political activists currently detained in jail on lese majeste charges. Continued …

Who is Bung Talu Wang, the Person Who Died Protesting Article 112?

“Bung” Netiporn Sanesangkhom, a 28-year-old political activist who advocated for youth to demand reform of the monarchy under the group “Talu Wang” (meaning “breakthrough the palace”), passed away shortly before noon on May 14 at Thammasat University Hospital in Pathum Thani province after being transferred from prison with sudden cardiac arrest.

Doctors from the Medical Correctional Hospital and Thammasat University Hospital tried to revive the patient. The patient did not respond to treatment and she passed away peacefully at 11:22 a.m. Continued …

Gunkul suspends cannabis investment amid confusion

Gunkul Engineering, a renewable energy developer that diversified into the cannabis and hemp business three years ago, is suspending further investment in cannabis based on its nearly 2-billion-baht budget, pending clarity from the government regarding its policy on the drug.

Nakhon Ratchasima villagers cash in on low water levels

Villagers in Nakhon Ratchasima flocked to buy fishing permits, taking advantage of the reduced water levels in a natural canal to catch fish for both consumption and sale, thereby boosting their income.

The funds raised from selling the permits are earmarked for village development.
