Extended alcohol sales hours ruled out for now

A government panel is adamant that alcohol sales hours will not be extended, citing rising numbers of casualties and road accidents.

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin said the ministry’s alcoholic beverage control committee took into consideration statistics about road accidents and related legal aspects, as the issue affected many people. Continued … 

Alibaba rumored to dump Lazada

An industry source familiar with Alibaba and the e-commerce industry says the company is in talks with Central Group and Charoen Pokphand (CP) to sell its stake in Lazada Thailand, following intensifying competition in the local market.

Lazada Group has denied a rumor that it is in talks with Central Group and Charoen Pokphand (CP) to sell its stake in Lazada Thailand.

Bangkok to offer Muay Thai as an elective in schools

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is introducing Muay Thai as an elective course in 437 schools it runs to preserve the culture and teach young people about discipline, says city council President Surajit Pongsingwitthaya.

The boxing classes will be offered as part of the health science and physical education study cluster, he said after a meeting with Thanakorn Chaisri, director of the BMA’s Department of Education. Continued … 

Probe into missing oil-smuggling ships linked to police force

An investigation into officers involved with the three missing seized oil-smuggling vessels is underway after a leaked chat showed a connection between some police and the mastermind of the oil smuggling gang.

The three seized ships, containing 330,000 liters of smuggled oil, had been docked at the marine police pier in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district along with two other seized vessels on March 19. 865-billion-baht loan needed to stimulate economic growth

Deputy PM and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira told the Parliament on Wednesday that the proposed borrowing of 865 billion baht to offset the deficit in fiscal 2025 budget bill is necessary to revive the sluggish economy and ensure that Thailand’s GDP can still expand to meet the target.

15,000 lose their jobs so far in 2024

The industrial sector remains lackluster as the Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to fall in May to 88.5 from 90.3 points, with 15,000 workers losing their jobs since early this year, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The report concerning layoffs in the first five months of 2024 emerged as the TISI, which gauges the health of the manufacturing sector, dropped for a second consecutive month. Continued …

Loei gears up for Phi Ta Khon Festival

The town of Dan Sai in Loei will host the annual Bun Luang and Phi Ta Khon Festival from July 7-9. Influenced by a Buddhist folktale, the celebration will transport worshipers back in time to when Prince Vessandorn, one of Buddha’s past lives, returned to the palace after meditation. People came out to greet him at the entrance as spirits had accompanied him from the forest to the city.
