Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Carden clarified that only overseas income transferred to Thailand is relevant for taxation. Issues like pre-taxed pensions and double taxation treaties should also be considered. Continued …

The Energy Ministry is planning to launch measures to soften the impact of expiring biofuel price subsidies in 2027, as the fuels become more expensive, affecting palm and sugar cane growers.

The farmers sell their produce to factories, which produce two types of biofuels: ethanol from sugar cane-derived molasses and palm oil-derived methyl ester. Continued …

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Thanawat Polvichai, president of the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, told the press on Wednesday that though spending during the festival is expected to hit a nine-year high, the underlying economic conditions will remain challenging. Continued …

From space missions to smart factories

Personal computers, GPS, mobile phones, digital cameras, the internet: many of the technologies in our lives today are older than we might think. They originate from concepts from the 1960s and 70s – an enormously creative, innovative period.

Another innovation on everyone’s mind is the digital twin, which many scientists and engineers today describe as the backbone of a new industrial revolution. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object. This digital counterpart enables real-time monitoring, diagnostics and predictive maintenance, which significantly increases operational efficiency. Continued …

Free holidays for Brits ‘high-jacked’ into Thai drug courier scheme

British citizens have reportedly been exploited as unwitting drug couriers, smuggling cannabis from Thailand back to the UK under the guise of a free holiday. British authorities have now called on Thai police to clamp down on this burgeoning drug mule scheme.

Willing Brits are being targeted through the Telegram chat app, lured by offers of free tours, accommodation, and even pocket money. The catch? Smuggling cannabis back to British shores. Continued …

Lufthansa has prepared more than 220,000 seats for its winter schedule, resuming non-stop flights from Munich to Bangkok using Airbus A380s to cater to a robust growth in visitors from Europe.

Anlee Do, general manager for Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and the Mekong region at Lufthansa Group, said the growing number of seats from November 2024 through March 2025 is mainly attributed to the expansion of Austrian Airlines, one of Lufthansa’s subsidiaries in Europe, which has increased the capacity of the Vienna-Bangkok route by 86% when compared with the summer schedule. A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. When I entered the Amazenia zone, I was startled to see hundreds of visitors in an extended queue that stretched across a shaded bridge from a walkway. Continued …

Rethinking Loy Krathong celebrations for a sustainable future

There is a growing concern about the environmental impact of the traditional Loy Krathong festival, particularly regarding the disposal of floating lanterns and offerings in the water. While the festival is a cherished cultural practice, there are growing calls for a balance between celebration and sustainability.

While the beauty of Loy Krathong celebrations is undeniable, the aftermath poses significant environmental challenges. The remnants of krathongs, often made of non-biodegradable materials, lead to pollution, and many festival-goers experience discomfort when faced with the unpleasant task of cleanup afterward. Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Cool

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, one of the pressing challenges is finding ways to stay cool during increasingly hot summers without exacerbating the problem. Traditional air conditioning is a double-edged sword; it provides relief from the heat but also contributes significantly to global warming.

Cooling is the second largest driver of electricity demand after industry, currently accounting for 20% of electricity consumption globally. Following current trends, the capacity of cooling equipment is expected to triple by 2050 – rising from 22 TW in 2022 to 58 TW in 2050 – the equivalent of 16 billion mini-split air-conditioning units, resulting in a more than doubling of electricity consumption. Dugongs ‘may decline 70%’

Dugong populations in the Andaman Sea are expected to decline by 70% over the next four years due to the diminishing supply of seagrass, which is their main source of food, a marine biologist has warned.

Thon Thamrongnawasawat said Wednesday that a crisis of depleting seagrass reserves is contributing to the decline of this marine mammal, so more action should be taken to help protect and preserve the increasingly rare species. Continued …
