Thailand’s 14 May general election resulted in a stunning triumph for the progressive Move Forward Party and a resounding rejection of political forces associated with the military-backed establishment that has governed since the May 2014 coup d’état.

Campaigning on a platform that directly challenged the military’s prerogatives, as well as those of the bureaucracy, oligarchy and monarchy, the establishment’s other pillars, Move Forward won 14 million votes and 151 seats, 10 more than the runner-up Pheu Thai Party, which had been the largest opposition force in parliament. But events since the election underscore a fundamental problem that animated Move Forward’s reformist agenda: unelected elites – namely, the military and its conservative allies – retain the power to determine political outcomes without regard for the popular will. Arrests ordered in Narathiwat fireworks blast, death toll reaches 12, with 300 homes ruined

Authorities in the southern province of Narathiwat have issued arrest warrants for the owners of a trading center that stored fireworks for resale and exploded on Saturday at 3 pm, killing 12 people and destroying 300 houses and premises in the Muno Market area of Muno subdistrict in the Sungai Kolok district of the province bordering Malaysia.

Over 108 people were admitted to hospital but, currently, only 10 are being held with physical injuries requiring medical supervision. The arrest warrants are effective from today, and call on the owners of the local business to present themselves before the court to answer charges after a police investigation was opened on Saturday on the instructions of National Police Chief Damrongsak Kittiprapas.
