Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. We were both broke and our immediate aim was to get to Alor Satar in Malaysia where Clarence had a bank transfer awaiting. We were so low on funds we opted to hitchhike. Continued …

PM Srettha joins the water splashing fun in Hua Hin

Sporting a colorful shirt and shorts and carrying a water gun, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin joined locals and tourists in the resort town of Hua Hin in celebrating Songkran in Pone Kingpetch Park, at an event arranged by the Hua Hin municipality.

In his Facebook post, the prime minister wrote that he hailed a “Kapor” (a four-wheel public transport vehicle, slightly larger than a tuk-tuk) to the park to participate in the Songkran celebrations. Continued …

Selected wage hike to 400 baht takes effect in Hua Hin

This year’s second minimum wage hike to 400 baht/day took effect yesterday, while a 10% increase is state officials’ salaries will be implemented on May 1.

The latest wage increase applied to employees at upscale hotels and resorts with at least 50 staff in the provinces of Bangkok, Krabi, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phangnga, Phuket, Rayong, Songkhla and Surat Thani. Continued …

Severe weather alert for 36 Thai provinces amid heatwave

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) today issued a severe weather warning for 36 provinces, forecasting thunderstorms, strong winds, and potential hailstorms across the regions. This alert comes amid a period of intense heat enveloping the country, with scorching temperatures and sporadic thunderstorms expected throughout the day.

As of 6am, today, the low-pressure system caused by the prevailing heat has covered upper Thailand, leading to sweltering conditions and the risk of sudden thunderstorms. Thailand Reports Total of 116 Deaths in Three Days of Songkran

A total of 936 road accidents, with 968 injuries and 116 deaths, were reported on Sunday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in three days (April 11-13) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 11-17).

The province with the total highest fatalities was Bangkok with 8 deaths. The total highest number of accidents were Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla with 39 each, and the highest number of injuries was in Songkhla with 45 injuries. Continued …

April alcohol sales set to double

The CEO of Carabao Group, Sathien Sathientham, predicts that April’s alcohol sales are set to double. This increase is anticipated due to the prolonged Songkran festival and the extension of bar and pub opening hours in several areas, including Bangkok and Phuket.

Report an eye-opener on Thailand’s aging population

April 13 was Songkran Day and also National Elderly Day, marked by the Songkran Festival celebrations, the traditional new year of Thais, when family members gather and pay their respects to the elders by sprinkling water on their hands while seniors give them blessing.

Preparing for the golden years

The government’s ability to successfully push through the draft National Elderly and Basic Pension Act to garner a first reading — the first stage of a bill’s passage — or acceptance of the principle of the bill from the House of Representatives is considered a crucial cornerstone for building a support system for Thailand’s elderly population.

The main principle is to amend the existing Act on the Elderly to change the system of providing support payments to the elderly from a “livelihood allowance” to a “pension”, so people reaching the age of 60 can receive a secure monthly income from the state. Continued …

Gold advanced to near a record after Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel over the weekend drove demand for haven assets.

Economy falters despite holiday boost

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) expects 140-200 billion baht to circulate in the country during this year’s Songkran festival, 11.8 billion baht of which will be spent by 10 million overseas visitors.

2024 the year of recovery for Thailand’s economy

The overall outlook for Thailand’s economy remains optimistic, with the tourism industry leading the way and upcoming government stimulus measures expected to provide further impetus, a senior JPMorgan Thailand executive said earlier this month.

The comments by senior country officer Marco Sucharitkul came after several financial institutions, including the Bank of Thailand, reduced Thailand’s 2024 GDP growth forecast from around 3% to 2.3%-2.7% due to weaker-than-expected export growth and declining manufacturing competitiveness. PM confirms digital wallet to be implemented in 4th quarter

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, along with his wife, visited the Hua Hin market in Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Sunday morning and confirmed that people would receive 10,000 baht under the digital wallet scheme in the fourth quarter of this year.

During his visit to the morning market, he asked merchants how their businesses were doing during the Songkran holidays. Most of them said things were improving this year. FTI defends participation of convenience stores in digital wallet scheme

The chief of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has urged the government to undertake immediate stimulus measures, as there was still time for the digital wallet scheme to be implemented.

The private sector expects continuous injection of money into the system, FTI Chairman Kriengkrai Thiennukul said. He suggested that the government find other measures to support the economy, such as accelerating procurement. Continued …

Foreign tourist drowns trying to retrieve water pistol from canal

The body of a foreign tourist who dropped a water pistol in the Saen Saep canal and jumped in to retrieve it was recovered on Sunday evening.
