Heatwave alert in Thailand with temperatures hitting 39 degrees Celsius

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning forecasting sweltering conditions across the country today, with peak temperatures expected to soar between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. Despite the heat, there is a possibility of isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon, with some regions experiencing light rainfall.

The weather on the east coast is expected to be hot during the day, with a 20% chance of thunderstorms in areas like Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. The intention behind the move is to offer more convenience to travelers, as the Central Terminal can be easily reached using the MRT electronic rail system.

Black panther spotted in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). The department disseminated photographs of the elusive animal on its Facebook page, sparking interest among wildlife enthusiasts.

The images, captured by a tourist named Sith Naowanirut on Feb. 25, were confirmed by park chief Mongkol Chaipakdee, who stated that the panther appeared unaffected by the tourist’s presence. BMW Group Thailand has revealed plans to establish an electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in the country this year. Almost 6 million tourists arrive in first eight weeks of 2024

Thailand welcomed 5,981,234 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and Feb. 25, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol announced on Tuesday. She added that these visitors have generated revenue of around 290.92 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs.

In the first eight weeks of this year, China was the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand with 1,114,316 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (759,828), Russia (397,006), South Korea (387,475), and India (293,129). Continued …

Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Interior Minister Anutin Charnivarikul said yesterday he is closely following the forest fire at Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district, with this causing enormous damage both in the forested areas and triggering dust and smoke problems that has spread to many provinces.

Firefighters and helicopters halt huge Chiang Mai forest fire

Some 250 firefighters backed by two helicopters on Tuesday managed to halt a forest blaze that raged through 33,000 rai of Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district.

The fires were put out just a day after the Third Army Area deployed troops to help fight the blaze and deter local villagers from setting new fires in the vast national park. Wildfires in the province of Tak have intensified, expanding across nine districts and prompting coordinated emergency responses to combat the flames and prevent hazardous smog, including the dangerous PM2.5 particles. Chiang Mai national park calls for troops to help fight forest fire

With forest fires raging for more than a week, Chiang Mai’s Ob Luang National Park officials have decided to turn to troops from the Third Army Area for help. So far, more than 33,000 rai (5,280 hectares) of forested land in the national park has been destroyed.

A power bank exploded on an AirAsia flight mid-air, sending passengers into panic. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of the country when flames and smoke were seen.

A huge forest fire at Chiang Mai’s Ob Luang National Park is spreading widely after officials failed to extinguish it for two days due to difficult access. Villagers who secretly started small fires to gather forest products are said to blame.

7-Eleven in Thailand Reports Record Income of 399 Billion Baht, plans expansion

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

CP All stated the increasing profit and income was from an increase in average sales of 5.5%, or 80,837 baht daily on average in each 7-11. It was reported that each customer spent 83 baht on average per bill and each store had 965 customers daily on average. Continued …

Toward the end of one road near the Grand Palace, enterprising food vendors have set up a cluster of stalls, transforming the street corner into a food bazaar. Tantalizing aromas drift from sidewalk kitchens serving up sizzling Thai delights. Locals and travelers sit on colorful plastic stools at colorful plastic tables where the dining is a rowdy cheek-by-jowl affair. A timeworn train passes through the 100-meter-long market eight times a day, almost bumping stalls along the way. 650,000 people treated for PM2.5-induced illnesses so far this year

More than 650,000 people have received medical treatment for illnesses caused by air pollution since the beginning of this year, particularly related to PM2.5, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Of these, more than 300,000 had respiratory diseases, about 80,000 heart and brain diseases, over 110,000 eye infections and irritations, and over 140,000 had skin infections. Continued …

On the second day of a light salvage mission undertaken by United States and Thai navies to remove armaments and other objects from HTMS Sukhothai, which capsized and sank in stormy seas late 2022, killing 24 sailors with five others missing, the corvette’s nameplate, a Buddha image and some documents were brought to the surface.

Thai exports in January see highest growth in 19 months

Thailand’s exports in January expanded for the sixth consecutive month, totaling US$22.6 billion (815.7 billion baht), and growing 10% year on year. Ministry of Commerce permanent secretary Keerati Rushchano said on Friday that the growth in January was the highest in 19 months, since June 2022.

However, the country’s imports totaled $25.4 billion (914.9 billion baht) in January, an increase of 2.6% year on year, with a trade deficit of $2.7 billion (99.2 billion baht), according to the official. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday poured cold water on plans to relocate Bangkok Port out of the city, warning of disruption to exports.

Asked about the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s proposal to move the port, Srettha told reporters covering his visit to City Hall that relevant agencies should carefully consider all the factors. Chinese automakers were the top three electric vehicle (EV) brands for Thai people last year, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).

Thai Airways records recovery with US$782 million profit in 2023

160,000 hectares of land in Thailand’s north face destruction in wildfires

An estimated 1 million rai (160,000 hectares), spanning 10 provinces in the northern part of Thailand, is predicted to be destroyed by wildfires between Feb. 19-25, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

For 28 years, Somsak and Wanna raised three children by selling home-made soy milk from a cart in Silom, Bangkok’s financial district. About a year ago, the couple began to see their income plummet, they said, because of the city’s forcible relocation of their business.

Thailand needs to diversify its agricultural exports, as it currently relies on a handful of items and only a few overseas markets, Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang said on Thursday.

He said that the country’s top five farm products constituted over 87% of its agricultural exports, while as much as 42% of Thai farm products were exported to China. “Thailand relies on a limited number of markets for our agricultural exports, particularly China, which imports as much as 42% of all Thai farm exports,” Napintorn said. 85% of tourists to Thailand now don’t need a visa

Within the past six months, the Thai government has made mammoth strides to ease the travel process for millions more foreign tourists. Previously, visa-exempt tourist travel was mainly restricted to the traditional or old markets such as the European Union, the UK, the U.S. and Australia. But now holidaymakers from Russia receive 90 days, needing neither prior approval nor a visa on arrival, while Chinese and Indian citizens (and several smaller countries) are awarded 30 days without any bureaucracy in a mutually-agreed deal.

Thai immigration authorities reckon that eight out of 10 short-term visitors to Thailand no longer need formal approval for travel. The exceptions are largely nationals from Africa, parts of Asia and South America. Continued …

Three distinct prehistoric animal fossils unearthed in Khon Kaen

A new discovery has surfaced in the Tambon Muang Wan region of Nam Phong district, Khon Kaen, as fossils of three different prehistoric animals have been unearthed. This comes as an addition to the previous findings in the same area.

MPs say ‘no’ to gender recognition bill

Parliament on Wednesday rejected the draft bill for legal gender recognition, title, and protection of gender-diverse people, with 154 votes in favor, 257 against, one abstention, and one vote not cast.

Health ministry wants ban on recreational cannabis by year-end

The government wants to ban recreational use of cannabis by the end of this year, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Wednesday, threatening to put thousands of marijuana shops and farms that have sprung up around the country since a decriminalization drive two years ago out of business.

Thailand will seek to get a new cannabis bill — which will explicitly outlaw recreational use of cannabis — approved by lawmakers in the lower house by the end of October, before parliament goes into recess, Dr. Cholnan said in Bangkok. Thailand welcomed 5,217,379 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and Feb. 18, a 49% jump year on year, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol reported on Tuesday. She added that these visitors have generated tourism income of around 254.7 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs.

Air quality in most of the country to improve for a week

Bangkok and 37 other provinces are still facing high levels of PM2.5 airborne pollution, but the situation is expected to improve tomorrow through next Saturday, the Pollution Control Department reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reports that, during the first two weeks of this month, 113 people visited the city’s eight air pollution clinics seeking treatment for pollution-related symptoms, compared to 100 during the same period last year. Continued …

Thailand braces for intense heat with temperatures soaring

Thailand is bracing for a severe heatwave, with weather maps turning a deep red, verging on black, indicating extreme temperatures are on the way. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts this year to be hotter by approximately 1.2 degrees Celsius compared to the previous year.

Dengue fever cases in Thailand on the rise

Dengue fever is on the rise, with a total of 13,126 cases, including 12 fatalities, being reported so far this year. This is a 2.2-fold increase over the same period last year, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Disease Control Department.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has revealed that Thailand has the highest rate of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) among the ASEAN nations. The minister announced this worrying statistic at an event commemorating World CCA Day in Maha Sarakham. The primary cause of this cancer is identified as liver fluke.

Thailand, being the Southeast Asia nation with the highest prevalence of CCA, is focusing on efforts to eliminate and treat existing CCA cases across 30 high-risk provinces. What is a liver fluke?

A liver fluke is a parasitic worm. You can become infected after eating contaminated raw or under-cooked freshwater fish or watercress. Infections are usually treated with a drug called triclabendazole. After liver flukes have been ingested, they travel from your intestines to your bile ducts in your liver, where they then live and grow.

Bangkok’s Mo Chit 2 bus terminal closes arrival area

Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), or Mo Chit 2 as it is commonly referred to, has announced the closure of its arrival area from March 1. The decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance passenger safety and curb the activities of illegal motorcycle taxis targeting travelers.

Average IQ level of Thais is ranked 5th in ASEAN and 64th globally

According to the World of Statistics, the Japanese have the highest IQ in the world, ranking first with a score of 106.48. Thailand is ranked 64th globally and, in the ASEAN region, it comes in fifth place behind Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

The 5-2 vote by the Thai central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to hold the key policy rate at 2.50% is a hint of an impending rate cut at their next meeting, according to some economists. The MPC decision in January disappointed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his aides, who had been forcefully arguing for the rate cut.

Thai manufacturers cut production as cheap Chinese imports take a toll

An influx of cheap imports from China is posing a serious threat to Thai manufacturers, Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) said on Friday.

Citing statistics from the Commerce Ministry, KResearch said Thailand in 2023 imported consumer products worth 469.52 billion baht from China – increasing 2.8% year on year – which accounted for 41% of all imports of consumer products. Continued …

VAT exemption sought only on online imports under Bt1,000

The Ministry of Finance is planning to revise the criteria for value-added tax (VAT) exemption on products sold via online platforms by reducing product value from 1,500 baht to 1,000 baht, a source familiar with the matter said Friday.

The move stemmed from a request of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB), which was seeking measures to counter cheap imports from overseas that are flooding Thai markets, and ensure fairness to Thai manufacturers, the source said. Continued …

2023 saw big jump in foreigner investments in Thai condos

Foreigners invested over 73.16 billion baht in condominiums in Thailand last year, increasing 23.5% year on year (YoY), the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Friday.

A total of 14,449 condominium units worth 73.16 billion baht were transferred to foreigners in 2023, the center said. The number of units sold increased 25% YoY, while the value of condos also increased 23.5% YoY. Continued …

Hua Hin Hospital warns of poor air quality in region

Hua Hin Hospital has issued a warning to residents and visitors about deteriorating air quality in the Hua Hin district. The hospital shared concerning data about the current levels of air pollution.

According to the report, the air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin reached a worrying level of 196 as of 8am, nearly double the threshold of what is considered safe. Health standards suggest that AQI values should ideally not exceed 100 to avoid adverse health effects. Continued …

Thailand’s hotspots surge, sparking environmental concerns

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported a surge in hotspots across Thailand and neighboring countries, exceeding 1,700 points in Thailand alone as of Feb. 14. (More about Thailand’s air pollution problem in the “Environment” section below.)

Beverage committee rejects increased alcohol sales hours

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee on Thursday chose not to agree to increasing the selling period of alcoholic beverages from 2pm to 5pm.

Committee secretary Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, who also heads the Department of Disease Control, said the move would violate a coup-era decree going back to 1972. Oil fund deficit headed toward Bt100 billion amid high global price

The Oil Fuel Fund will see its accumulated deficit reach 100 billion baht by April due to high fuel prices and volatile geopolitical risks, an informed source at the Energy Ministry said on Thursday. The fund has been spent on subsidizing diesel prices – at 5.30 baht per liter at present, up by 0.73 baht from 4.57 baht per liter previously.

‘World’s priciest carbon credits’ in Thailand’s first forest scheme

The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) has purchased 400 tons of carbon credits at what is considered the world’s highest price for such a project. The bank bought 120 million baht worth of credits at 30,000 baht per ton in the BAAC carbon credit project, the first forest carbon credit initiative in Thailand.

Having been designated as Natural World Heritage sites, Thailand’s most valued forests are highly expected from the public that they can retain their ecological values that meet global recognition and the context of the new global biodiversity framework.

However, the three sites — Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries, Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, and Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex — have been facing pressure from highly charged threats, from sophisticated poaching to unsound state development, to a decades-long land rights conflict, prompting their world heritage status and conservation work to be critically challenged.
