Massive Phuket crackdown sweeps away vast Russian business network, with Bt1.5 billion seized

Thai police have dismantled a vast network that illicitly assisted foreigners, primarily Russians, in securing long-term stays in Thailand through fraudulent means involving shell companies, officials reported on Friday.

The operation, spearheaded by a 45-year-old Russian woman and a Thai accomplice, facilitated foreign residency by setting up bogus companies. This network, based in Phuket, involved the Thai woman being listed as an executive or shareholder in over 270 companies. Under Thai law, while foreigners can operate businesses, they must do so as part of a joint venture with Thai nationals, holding no more than 49% ownership to protect local economic interests. Light at the end of the tunnel for global economy

Entering the middle of the second quarter, the world economy has begun to signal a more coordinated recovery. Preliminary composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) readings for May recovered in the U.S., the Euro zone, Japan and other large economies, indicating global economic growth is expanding more broadly.

Tourism Minister stands firm with 300 baht tourist tax

Thailand’s new Tourism and Sports Minister, Sermsak Pongpanich, has hinted at the impending introduction of a tourist tax, known as the Kha Yeap Pan Din, translating to a landing fee. Although no specific timeline was provided for its implementation, the newly appointed minister emphasized the unlikelihood of abandoning the proposed tax.

Visa delays and insufficient flight capacity have held back a full recovery in China’s outbound travel after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the CEO of Trip.com Group, the country’s largest online travel agency.

Leelawadee, the flower of World No Tobacco Day

World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on May 31, with ashtrays and fresh flowers used as a common symbol in marking the occasion. Thailand, however, doesn’t use any common blooms to mark this important day but rather a specific flower – leelawadee.

Leelawadee (plumeria or frangipani), a small flowering tree often grown as cosmopolitan ornamentals, has long been used by Thais as a symbol of quitting personal vices. 2.4-magnitude quake in Koh Samui

An earthquake, measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale, struck Koh Samui at 8.24am on Thursday. Jirawat Kamchadphai, a meteorologist at the Earthquake Observation Division, said the quake happened in tambon Ang Thong on the western part of the island.

Factory output unexpectedly rises for first time in 19 months

Thailand’s manufacturing production index unexpectedly rose 3.43% in April from a year earlier, increasing for the first time in 19 months, helped by higher exports and tourism, the Industry Ministry said on Thursday.

China Harbour Engineering Co. (CHEC) has won the infrastructure contract for phase 3 development of Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province, the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) announced on Wednesday.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, is ready to launch its new data center region in Thailand by early next year as part of a commitment announced in 2022.

An investment of more than 190 billion baht (US$5.15 billion) in Thailand through 2037 will provide developers, startups, entrepreneurs, enterprises, government, educators and non-profit organizations greater choice when running their applications, while serving end users from data centers located in Thailand, according to AWS. Subaru to end car-assembly operations in Thailand

TC Subaru (Thailand) announced recently that all Subaru vehicles will be imported now that Tan Chong International (TCIL) and Subaru Corp. have decided to cease car-assembly operations in Thailand by year end.

“From 2025, cars sold in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia will transition to imported cars from Japan. This will enable the introduction of new products to markets like Thailand more quickly and strengthen brand-building through new Subaru models in premium segments that emphasize technology,” the statement said. Thailand is unlikely to abandon the controversial tourist tax called “Kha Yeap Pan Din” (fee for stepping on Thai soil), also known as a “landing fee”, according to new Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanich.

Thailand’s recent tax regulation changes have sent ripples through the expat community. By March 2025, foreign retirees and other expats in Thailand will be required to file income tax returns for the 2024 tax year, marking a significant shift in the nation’s approach to taxing foreign residents.

Woman in Hua Hin Arrested for Allegedly Organizing Fake Weddings

Thai cyber police have apprehended a woman believed to be at the center of an elaborate wedding scam in Hua Hin. Wimonrat, the alleged mastermind behind this matrimonial fraud, has left many couples high and dry after pocketing substantial deposits for venue and wedding preparations that never materialized.

Wimonrat, a 37-year-old resident of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, was a wanted individual with no less than three different arrest warrants issued against her. These date back to early 2021 from courts across Thailand, including Samut Prakan Provincial Court, Chon Buri District Court, and Thon Buri Criminal Court. Her deceitful actions have reportedly caused damages exceeding 150,000 baht (£3,500). Continued …

Fuel Fund revs diesel price to 32.44 baht per liter

The Fuel Fund yesterday announced an increase in the diesel price by 50 satangs per liter, raising it to 32.44 baht per liter effective today. Despite reduced expenses, the fund still faces liquidity issues, according to the director of the Fuel Fund Office, Wisak Wattanaphap.

Migrant workers take over house of Thai-Australian couple in Korat

A Thai woman and her Australian husband filed a police complaint after a group of migrant workers took over their house in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat.

The Thai woman, 66-year-old Somporn Rolland, told officers at Sikhio Police Station that she returned home from Australia in February to find the group of migrants living in her house and making numerous changes to the property. Continued …

20 in intensive care after turbulence scare

Fifty-eight of the passengers injured when Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 encountered severe turbulence en route from London to Singapore yesterday are still being treated in hospital, including 20 who are in intensive care units (ICU), according to a statement from Bangkok’s Samitivej Srinagarind Hospital.

Yesterday, 103 passengers were taken to Samitivej Srinagarind, Samitivej Sukhumvit and Bangkok hospitals and the Samitivej Suvarnabhumi Clinic, 27 of whom have already been discharged. Continued …

Bail sought for political prisoners under lese majeste law

Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) is working to secure bail for 19 political prisoners, predominantly those charged under Section 112, commonly known as the lese majeste law, to uphold their human rights.

TLHR announced yesterday that the number of political prisoners, especially those detained under Section 112 of the Criminal Code, has surged since last year. Many of these individuals have been denied the right to apply for bail while awaiting trial. Continued …

Baht fundamentals have deteriorated

Uncertainty surrounding the U.S. interest rate trajectory, alongside geopolitical tensions, underpin much of the baht’s weakness so far this year, according to BMI officials. “We think the baht will trade sideways and reach 37.50 to. the U.S. dollar by year-end once these temporary factors subside,” they predict.

“We are, however, less optimistic about the baht’s long-term outlook, especially as the key fundamentals that originally supported the currency have deteriorated.” Continued …

According to statistics from Niesen, the ASEAN region had some 13.5 million influencers in 2023, while global revenue through advertising and other channels generated by influencers was about $19 billion. Group seeks gain from US-China trade war

The U.S. recently imposed very high tariffs on Chinese products, notably electric vehicles and semiconductors, which will cause China to concentrate on expanding its EV manufacturing within Asia, with Thailand poised to become a key export hub, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

President Joe Biden’s administration cited Beijing’s unfair trade practices for the hike, with EV tariffs to be quadrupled to a 100% rate, solar cells and semiconductors doubled to a 50% rate, and certain steel and aluminum imports from China raised to 25%, more than triple the current level, according to media reports. Thailand launches new push to spotlight hidden tourism gems
