Foreign husband in Cha Am dies after saving Thai wife learner driver

A husband from Myanmar has died after helping his Thai wife escape death after she reversed into a 10-meter deep pond in front of their house at a Cha- Am housing estate.

Naimo, 39, had decided to let his learner driver wife Noranat, 41, reverse out of their home in Ban Nong Yao, Khao Yai subdistrict.

She later admitted she was not a good driver and she accidentally panicked in reverse by stepping on the accelerator. Continued …

Illegal pork import gets destroyed in Cha Am

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives buried more than 700,000 kilograms of smuggled pork meat and entrails in Petchaburi province’s Cha Am district yesterday.

According to Minister Chalermchai Sri-on, the 723,786kg of smuggled pork — worth 123 million baht — was the largest load of illegal meat ever destroyed by the authorities.

The idea of burying pork came from the World Organization for Animal Health. The method was touted as the safest, cheapest, and most effective eco-friendly method that the authorities can use. Continued …

Chula develops blood test for markers of Alzheimer’s 10 years before onset

The Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Center at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, has unveiled research on a blood test for markers of Alzheimer’s that can give a 10-year warning. The test may enable people to slow the development of dementia in old age.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that many people pray that they or their loved ones do not experience. But looking at today’s social context, there’s no denying that the disease is more relevant to us than it seems because it usually manifests itself when we are 60 years old and above. The fact that we are in an aging society, dementia, therefore, becomes more common.

Currently, 50 million people are suffering from dementia around the world. In Thailand, there are 700 thousand such patients, 500 thousand of which suffer from Alzheimer’s. Continued …

Parliament study a blueprint for legalizing casinos minus controls: NGO

An NGO has slammed the Thai Parliament’s study on entertainment complexes as a blueprint for legalizing casinos that ignores damage to society from legalized gambling.

Thanakorn Khomkris, secretary-general of the Stop Gambling Foundation, said that about 95% of the report focuses on how to legalize and collect revenues from casinos, while only 5% is devoted to other entertainment-complex businesses such as hotels, theme parks, sports arenas, and shopping malls.

“This shows that the study aims to highlight the pros of legalizing casinos in Thailand, while many important topics have been omitted, such as prevention of money laundering and other criminal activities, and the impact of legalized gambling on society,” he said on Thursday. Continued …

Corruption investigation leaves some Thai immigration officials in hot water

A corruption investigation has left some Thai immigration officials in hot water over their alleged involvement in helping Chinese businessmen. Senior Immigration Bureau investigators say they found clear evidence that some officers are helping foreign criminals by serving as owners of foundations that provided visas to Chinese nationals.

According to reports, one of the foundations had its headquarters in a chicken coop, which is clearly the wrong location for a foundation office. Further findings revealed schools applying for visas for such Chinese nationals, as well as falsification of signatures by a deputy governor.

The investigation found some IB officers using a fake foundation to hire agents to falsify visa documents. Police are expected to summon the accused officers, who range from station heads and commanders to officers. Continued …

Thai economy up against it in 2023 despite the Chinese tourist hype

Thailand’s economy in 2023 is already facing challenges and mired in difficulty despite the resumption of the Chinese tourist trade, with the country recording a current account deficit in November. A sharp drop in exports in the last three months of 2022 culminated in a 7.5% dive in December.

These latest figures have led to a revised GDP growth for the last quarter of the year, down from 4.5% to 2.5%. The downturn in the manufacturing and export sector, which accounts for 60% of the economy, is coming with the government seeking to fund a ฿3.34 trillion budget announced on Thursday for the year ahead, while seeking to control public sector debt, including short-term liabilities of ฿250 billion incurred to tamp down inflation last year, money that is owed to the country’s oil fund and electricity generation firms.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan ocha and key ministers attended a ceremony at Government House on Thursday where the budget to 2024 was unveiled totaling ฿3.34 trillion in expenditure. General Prayut pointed out that the government would have to find the tax revenue to fund the budget and referred to the ongoing economic recovery, particularly in the foreign tourism sector. Merged True-DTAC to be called True Corp

The boards of the telecom operators True Corp.oration and Total Access Communication (DTAC) have agreed to call their merged company True Corporation.

A joint shareholders’ meeting will be held on Feb. 23 to approve the new corporate structure and other details related to the amalgamation, the companies said in statements to the Stock Exchange of Thailand on Thursday.

The merger, to be completed within the first quarter of this year, will result in the creation of a telecom giant with a total of 55 million mobile subscribers, compared with 45 million for the current market leader Advanced Info Service Plc (AIS). Continued …

Baht surges to its strongest level in 10 months

The bath strengthened to 33.06 per United States dollar this morning, the highest level in 10 months, according to Kasikorn Research Center (KRC).

Australian Woman Runs Over, Kills Street Painter in Pattaya

An Australian driver accidentally ran over a street painter on the job and killed him in Pattaya Wednesday.

The victim, Prasit Kabphet, was painting the road at the entrance of Wongamat Residence Condominium in Soi 16 in the Naklua subdistrict, Banglamung district, Chonburi.

CCTV footage discovered that the 62-year-old Australian, Michelle Ann Eddy, seemed to be totally unaware of Prasit when she turned her vehicle around the corner to enter her condo’s front gate where the 45-year-old victim was working. The driver then ran over the victim and kept driving to her parking lot, where someone rushed to tell her that she had run over a man. Continued …

Thailand’s birth rate falls to 71-year low, sparking alarm

Thailand is becoming a graying society as the number of children born last year hit a 71-year low, the Social Development and Human Security Ministry announced on Thursday.

Only 502,000 children were born in Thailand last year, about 30% below the target of 700,000 and the lowest birth rate in 71 years, Anukul Pidkaew, permanent secretary at the ministry, told a press conference.

He was joined by Dr. Somchai Jitsuchon, a researcher at the Thailand Development Research Institute. Both described the low birth rate as a “crisis”. Continued …

2-meter tapeworm found in Thai man who eats raw meat

A Thai man posted a video on social media to warn people to avoid eating raw meat after a two-meter tapeworm was found in his body.

Amarit Chuetamuen posted videos to share his deworming experience. In the first video, Amarit told his followers that his anus had become itchy and then felt something slipping out of his bottom.

He thought it was his intestine at first but found that it was moving. Then, a 10-centimeter parasite worm slipped out of his back end. The cause of parasites like this is believed to be consuming raw beef. Continued …

Hua Hin: City of Happiness?

Hua Hin government officials have devised a new local development plan for 2023-2027, with the theme “Hua Hin, the City of Happiness”, which includes five strategies:

  1. Promotion of tourism, infrastructure and economy development.
  2. Promote the development of education, religion, culture and recreation.
  3. Promote the development of public health and the environment
  4. Promote development of social welfare, community and quality of life
  5. To promote the development of administration and services

PKK names 8 districts for tourism promotion

The “Hidden Wow Prachuap Khiri Khan” project will promote tourist attractions or tourist resources in eight districts with high potential to increase the depth of travel experiences in the province.

The campaign aims to distribute tourists both locally and during travel time to reduce the concentration of tourists in any particular area. Tourists will also be encouraged to travel on weekdays and focus on the advantages of travel year-round.

The eight identified districts for the Hidden Wow campaign are:

  • Hua Hin District: Khao Tao and Khao Tao Reservoir
  • Pranburi District: Kung Sai Beach and Khao Kalok Beach
  • Pranburi District: Phraya Nakhon Cave, Nom Sao Island, and Khao Daeng Canal
  • Kui Buri District: Kui Buri Safari National Park
  • Amphoe Mueang including the 3 bays (Ao Prachuap, Ao Manao, Ao Noi) and Khlong Bueng Reservoir.

Foreigners Sought Who Allegedly Attacked Thai Tourists on Samui Island

Foreigners who allegedly attacked a group of Thai tourists on Samui Island reportedly relocated to Phuket. Thailand’s most famous cop, “Big Joke”, has personally ordered for the suspects to be found.

The Bo Phut Police said they have identified a group of foreigners who allegedly attacked Thai tourists on New Year’s Eve. A summons for assault has been issued for them and the foreigners, who are believed to be expats, have been encouraged to turn themselves in. Thai police have also contacted the Immigration Bureau in regards to the visa status of the suspects.

Deputy National Police Chief Gen. Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn went to the Bo Phut Police Station on Samui Island to make urgent progress on the case. Continued …

Foreign Doctor on Vacation Rescues Russian Lady from Drowning at Patong Beach

A foreign tourist, who is a licensed medical doctor, rescued a Russian tourist from drowning at Phuket’s Patong Beach.

Patong lifeguards said that on Wednesday a female Russian tourist was struggling in the seawater. Foreign tourists who saw the incident helped to pull her up to the beach.

The female Russian tourist was unconscious and had no pulse. A male foreign tourist and Patong lifeguards provided help and CPR to the Russian woman before her pulse was detected again. Continued …

5 foreign tourists injured as vehicle topples down ravine in Chiang Rai; driver dead

An accident on the hill leading up to Moo Ban Akha Pang Klang, a popular tourist area in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, resulted in one death and five injuries.

A Toyota Fortuner was driven off the dirt track and toppled 30 meters down a ravine, flipping many times. It ended up in the Mae Sat creek.

The driver Weerawat, 51, from Chiang Mai, was reportedly thrown out of the vehicle, then crushed and drowned under its weight in the creek. Continued …

Foreign tourist breaks back at Pai waterfall

A foreign tourist broke his back in a motorbiking accident at a waterfall in the backpacking hotspot of Pai, Mae Hong Son province on Thursday.

Issam Messaoudi, a dual Belgian-Moroccan national, was rescued and rushed to Pai Hospital after his motorcycle lost control while he was riding up a path next to Mor Paeng waterfall in Pai district.

X-rays taken at the hospital showed his spine was broken, prompting medics to transfer him to the better-equipped Bangkok Hospital in Chiang Mai – an agonizing 130-kilometer journey. Continued …

Phuket officials quash plans for floating beach club

Phuket Gov. Narong Woonsiew and a number of other officials have put a stop to plans to launch a floating beach club, or party boat, in the Andaman Sea. Narong says he “does not approve” of Yona Beach Club’s plans and has ordered officials to carry out inspections and meet with the club’s owners.

The vessel has spent the past two weeks on a PR charm offensive, inviting media and influencers to visit the boat while it’s been moored in Patong Bay.

Meanwhile, Capt. Krit Kluebmat of the Maritime Enforcement Command Center says officials from Kathu District Office and Patong Municipality Office also oppose the idea, claiming the boat will cause environmental damage and create too much noise. Continued …

Thailand clarifies all measures to control Covid as tourism surges

The National Communicable Diseases Committee on Thursday approved the government’s revised measures for controlling Covid-19, including tests on arriving tourists with obvious symptoms of the disease, and charging fees for vaccinating tourists who voluntarily request shots.

The decisions were made at the committee’s first meeting of the year, which was chaired by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

It followed an earlier decision by the government to reimpose proof of vaccination for all foreign tourists ahead of the imminent return of tourists from China. That decision was, however, quickly scrapped. Some confusion resulted, so the committee provided a detailed list of its preparations for ensuring Covid-19 remains under control as tourism surges. Government Decisions On Legalizing Thai Casinos Stall

After a final report with recommendations to move forward to establish legal casinos in Thailand was delivered to government on July 27, 2022, a July 29 forum in Hua Hin heard from Dr. Saensak Siriphanich and Udorn Olsson, both key members of the 60-person committee.

The speakers suggested that government cabinet considerations were expected to approve the committee’s recommendations to establish legal casinos, then for regulations to be framed. The speakers were optimistic that there could be licenses approved and investment agreements in place before the end of the year (2022).

Although naming Prachuap Khiri Khan Province (Hua Hin) but not Phetchaburi, the speakers stated that the preferred regional location is within 40 kilometers of the Hua Hin Airport. This means a site could be in either province. Continued …

Tourism, wellness, and green businesses will be the major growth drivers for the Thai economy this year, Deputy Commerce Minister Sinit Lertkrai said on Friday.

The three sectors have a bright outlook for 2023 due to their performance last year, growth prospects, the current business environment, and economic trends, Sinit said, citing a forecast by the Department of Business Development.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic will continue to create an economic crisis globally, it creates opportunities for new businesses, Sinit said, adding: “Entrepreneurs need to adapt swiftly and carefully study business trends.” Continued …

The suggestion is part of TDRI’s latest study, “A Portrait of High-Income Thailand: Future Labor Market Outlook”, which was released on Friday. The goal of this research is to find the best solution for labor policies and measures in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thai baht to continue strengthening, Asian economies to benefit from China’s reopening

The baht, which in October was trading around 38 to the U.S. dollar, has strengthened to 34 to the dollar, and the currency is likely to continue to strengthen into 2023 as the Thai economy continues to recover, and China’s reopening will help sustain recessionary fears from the west.

Thailand to up tax on sweet drinks, food from April 1

Sweet, sugary food and beverages will become more expensive from April 1, as the Excise Department will be pushing up the tax again.

Ekniti Nitithanprapas, the department’s director-general, said on Friday that the hike was initially meant to be put in place on Oct. 1 last year, but was postponed by the Cabinet to March 31 this year.

“The Excise Department will launch the third phase of the tax hike in fiscal 2023 in line with the law,” he said. Continued …

14,737 lives lost on Thai roads in 2022

As many as 939,713 road accidents were reported in Thailand last year, up 4.7% from 2021, the Thailand Road Accidents Data Center for Road Safety Culture (ThaiRSC) said.

According to data revealed by ThaiRSC on Friday, road accidents claimed 14,737 lives and injured 924,799 in Thailand last year. Of them, 536 deaths and 7,885 injuries were foreigners.

ThaiRSC said that the average damage incurred per accident was about 200,000 baht, while most accidents occur during morning rush hour, especially from 10am to 11am. Continued …

Online sales of lottery tickets surged since June debut

As many as 890,000 people won cash prizes totaling 7.5 billion baht from lottery draws after the Government Lottery Office office debuted online sales for tickets on June 2 last year, the office said on Friday.

Following the debut of online lottery ticket sales, 14 draws were held between June 16 and Dec. 30 last year.

Online sales were introduced to reduce price gouging by retailers, who added 25% surcharges on the 80-baht ticket price. Lottery draws are held twice a month: on the 16th and at the end of the month. Continued …

Blood alcohol content limit for drivers in Thailand should be set at 0%

The Center for Alcohol Studies (CAS) has urged relevant departments to consider setting the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for drivers in Thailand at 0%, instead of 0.05%, because drivers with 0.05% of BAC in their system still cause fatal road accidents.

The legal BAC is set at 0.05% in Thailand. This means that motorists in the country can drive if their BAC is less than 0.05%, or 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. This is the equivalent of two glasses of wine or beer.

The vice president of the CAS, Ponthep Wijitkunakorn, used a recent fatal road accident that killed five victims in the Isaan province of Sisaket to emphasize why the legal limit for a driver’s blood alcohol level needed to be changed. Continued …

Energy investors who won an auction under the state’s “Energy for All” renewable scheme are pushing ahead with their projects after the latest legal hurdle that caused more delays was cleared.

Thai village piloting carbon-credit plan to preserve forests

A village in central Thailand is piloting a new approach to forest preservation by partnering with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in a project to trade carbon credits in return for keeping its area green.

“When local communities realize that their forests can be a source of steady income, they will be driven to preserve their green areas,” said Varawut Silpa-archa, minister of Natural Resources and Environment, who attended the opening ceremony Ban Khong Ta village in central Petchaburi province.

“These communities will not only benefit from the plants and fruits they pick, but also the carbon credit market. We hope that over 12,000 communities nationwide will learn from this,” and join the initiative, which is being overseen by the Royal Forestry Department, he added. Continued …

Tourism sector preps for Chinese

Tourism operators are prepared for a wave of Chinese tourists in terms of hotel room capacity, public health hygiene and flight capacity, though demand remains unclear.

The government confirmed on Thursday Chinese tourists will be exempted from RT-PCR Covid tests upon arrival, but will be required to buy Covid insurance to guarantee they have medical expense coverage in case they are infected before flying back home.

In the provinces, arms open for Chinese return

Key tourism provinces are bracing for the return of tourists from China after the country reopens its borders on Sunday.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya of Chon Buri are popular among Chinese travelers. About 300,000 Chinese arrivals are forecast for the first quarter of the year, including January with a reduced total of only 60,000 due to limited seat capacity.

New curbs hobble return of Indians

Tourism operators have started to feel the pinch from the slowing Indian market in the first quarter, particularly the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) segment and independent travelers, as the Indian government requires Covid-19 RT-PCR tests for those returning from Thailand.

The Indian MICE segment from February to April is “on hold” because of the rising cost of Covid-19 tests and fear of getting Covid-19 abroad, said Rajesh Nair, chief executive of Enchantive Asia, an inbound tour company focusing on the subcontinent.

Covid strains from West more serious than from China, says virologist

New coronavirus strains from visitors arriving from western countries could pose a higher health threat than older strains from tourists arriving from China, according to virologist Yong Poovorawan.

Amid concerns over rising infections with China easing restrictions on travel, Dr. Yong wrote on his Facebook account on Friday that China’s recent outbreak is predominantly led by the Omicron subvariant of Covid-19, BA.5, which had already spread in Thailand.

“We should be more concerned about the strains that have not spread in Thailand, especially the BQ variant from western countries, which is more alarming,” wrote Dr. Yong, chief of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine. “We do not check and cannot force (them) to wear face masks.” Continued …

Vintage Car Parade this weekend at Dusit Thani

The 20th Vintage Car Parade to be held this weekend, courtesy of Dusit Thani Hua Hin Resort.

About 50 vintage cars will be involved and will arrive at the resort on Friday afternoon.

A parade is planned for Saturday at 9am, with the group stopping for lunch at Monsoon Valley Vineyard. The parade will also visit the Ban Wang Khoi School in Thap Tai.

A dinner will in the Dusit Thani Grand Ballroom will complete the visit, with vehicles returning to Bangkok on Sunday.

Hua Hin World Cup won by Swiss team

The Switzerland team defeated Thailand in a penalty shootout (following a 1-1 draw in extra time) to win this year’s Hua Hin World Cup.

The tournament raised 20,000 baht for the Jungle Aid Foundation.

A Story of Life-Saving Cooperation and Coordination

A 28-year-old male patient involved in a car accident received a serious brain injury and was recently admitted to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. Despite a neurosurgery team making every effort with surgery and intensive care, the patient was declared to be in a state of brain death but the condition of the heart and other organs were still good.

After close consultation with the family of the man, permission was received for organ donations to the Thai Red Cross Society Organ Donation Center to be made available for patients waiting for life-saving organ transplants. The donated organs consisted of a heart, a liver, two kidneys, a pancreas and two eyes.

The hospital then coordinated with the Thai Red Cross Society to prepare a team of doctors, nurses and equipment to collect the organs. The heart transplantation was particularly important, with time limits on a viable transplantation making transport from Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital to Bangkok impractical by road. Continued …

Meteor shower will light up the skies tonight

The annual Geminids meteor shower can be viewed tonight before 11pm, with stargazers in rural areas expected to get the best view, according to the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand.

There could be as many as 150 meteors per hour when the shower is most visible, from about 8 pm until 11 pm, the institute said.

The meteor shower can be viewed with the naked eye from locations that are distant from artificial lighting. Continued …

The Amazing MuayThai Festival 2023 will be held at Rajabhat Park in the Hua Hin Feb. 4-6, announced the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

TAT is organizing this event with the Royal Thai Army, the Ministry of Culture, Sports Authority of Thailand, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, and private sector partners.

LPG price cap to remain through January

The Energy Policy Administration Committee (EPAC) has decided to continue capping the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is used as cooking gas, at 408 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until the end of next month in a bid to slow rising living costs.

The group also agreed to maintain the ex-refinery price of LPG at 19.98 baht per kg. LPG is a petroleum product created from the crude oil refining process. Continued …

Baht hits 6-month high against dollar after US Fed rate hike

The baht opened at 34.53 to the U.S. dollar today, strengthening from Wednesday’s close of 34.57 to a six-month high.

The currency will likely move between 34.50 and 34.70 against the greenback during the day, Krungthai market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon said that the baht strengthened on dollar weakening and gold sales but cautioned the Thai currency could weaken if foreign investors begin selling Thai stocks due to a risk-off state in the U.S. and Asian currency markets. Continued …

World Bank eyes slower Thai growth

The Thai economy is projected to recover faster than expected this year, but will face slower growth in 2023 because of global headwinds, according to the World Bank.

Thailand’s economic growth is estimated to expand by 3.4% in 2022, exceeding the 2.9% World Bank projection made in June.

Growth was supported by stronger private consumption and services exports thanks to the nascent tourism recovery and strong pent-up demand after the relaxation of lockdown measures and travel restrictions, according to the World Bank report “Thailand Economic Monitor: Fiscal Policy for a Resilient and Equitable Future” released on Wednesday. Unemployment drops amid increasing economic activity

Unemployment declined thanks to increased economic activity and a rebound in tourism. However, household debt increased, albeit at a slower pace, while total loan quality improved.

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) reported on Wednesday unemployment in the third quarter tallied 491,400, representing 1.23% of the total workforce, declining from 546,600, or 1.37%, of the workforce in the second quarter.

The unemployment rates in 2020 and 2021 were 1.69% and 1.96%, respectively. Before the pandemic, the unemployment rate was around 1%. Continued …

Shrimp industry continues to tread water

The local shrimp industry remains in the doldrums this year because of persistent diseases and unfavorable weather.

Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the Thai Shrimp Assn., said on Wednesday the country’s overall shrimp production is expected to stay at 280,000 tons, on par with the previous year.

Production from the upper southern region is expected to account for 32% of this year’s output, with the eastern region making up 25%, the lower southern region on the Andaman Coast 21%, the lower southern region on the Gulf of Thailand 10%, and the central region 12%. Continued …

Media reported on a TikTok video going viral under the name flower_for. It featured a family dismantling a wall and rafters in a house after 50,000 baht of a grandmother’s money went missing over the last year.

They said that mice had stolen the old lady’s money and stashed it in the cavities.

Japanese restaurants see record-breaking growth in Thailand

The number of Japanese restaurants in Thailand rose 21.9% in 2022 over the year before, the highest jump since the Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro) began keeping track in 2007, Jetro said on Wednesday.

Jetro recorded a total of 5,325 Japanese restaurants in Thailand this year, up 955 from 4,370 in 2021. It said the expansion of Japanese restaurants has been prominent in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. However, since 2019, it has been possible to find Japanese restaurants in every province, according to Jetro.

“I’m glad that more Japanese restaurants are opening in Thailand … [they] offer a great opportunity for Japanese food lovers to taste Japan’s delicious dishes and expand the market for Japan’s food industry,” said Jun Kuroda, president of Jetro Bangkok. Continued …

Chinese mafia case taken over by police chief

Thai Police Commissioner General Damrongsak Kittiprapat has taken over responsibility for the case involving the alleged Chinese drug mafia network linked with Du Hao or Chaiyanat Kornchayanant. Police Gen. Surachate Hakparn or “Big Joke” will continue to play a crucial coordinating role with the Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner Police Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengsawang handling the investigation into drugs being sold at exclusive nightclubs in Bangkok.

Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Chief Gen. Torsak Sukwimol will take charge of suppression activities concerning the extended gang network and the use of “gray capital”, which has been linked with extensive property purchases. Alleged malfeasance within the Immigration Bureau is being reviewed by a high-ranking civil service commission.

Following an announcement on Monday by Damrongsak that he was taking over supervision of the DU Hao case and associated investigations, the operation of a suspected Chinese illicit drug network has also been linked, in the last week, to allegations of malfeasance within the Immigration Bureau. CP and Toyota join forces to study path toward carbon neutrality in Thailand

Toyota Motor Thailand has announced its partnership with Thai conglomerate CP Group to support a carbon-neutral pathway.

The project also includes Toyota’s competitors such as Daihatsu, Isuzu, Suzuki, and its affiliated company Hino.

Thai firm to buy used cooking oil to convert to plane fuel

Thailand’s leading petroleum and energy conglomerate Bangchak Corp. and its joint venture will launch a campaign to recycle used cooking oil for making plane fuel.

Bangchak’s Senior Executive VP Somchai Tejavanija, acting executive vice president of the refinery and logistics business Kanthamat Kritayanukul, and Executive VP of BBGI Plc Kittima Wongsaen, as well as directors of Bangchak and BSGF, encouraged people to sell their used cooking oil at 44 Bangchak petrol stations as they launched the“ Tod-Mai-Ting”(recycling used cooking oil) campaign, which opens on Dec. 21.

Used cooking oil will be converted into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), in response to the bio-circular-green economy (BCG) economic model. It emphasizes the use of biotechnology to create value addition to the economy and aligns with the circular economy and green economy, together with social development to create stability and sustainability, according to Bangchak. Industrial estates to install solar systems

Industrial estate developer Pinthong Industrial Park Plc (PIN) plans to allocate 1.6 billion baht to invest in renewable energy projects by installing floating and rooftop solar panels at its industrial estates.

The floating solar panels will be installed on a reservoir spanning 300 rai at its industrial complex, while the investment in rooftop solar panels is for another five industrial estates with total area of 1.3 million square meters, said Surach Patanawongyuneyong, chief operations officer of PIN.

“The company is in the process of developing the two projects. We expect them to be completed so we can start recognizing revenue in the second quarter of next year,” he said. Continued … 

EV producers cheered by bookings at motor show

Bookings for 5,800 electric vehicles (EVs) at the Thailand International Motor Expo are providing fuel for the government’s ongoing efforts to develop the domestic EV industry.

The EV total made up 15% of all car bookings, which tallied 36,679 units during the 12-day car event that ended on Dec. 12, according to the organizer.

Chinese EVs were the most popular among prospective buyers, partly because their manufacturers have joined the government’s EV incentive scheme, which includes tax cuts and subsidies, said Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit. Continued …

House panel reverses cannabis status as narcotic

The House committee vetting the controversial cannabis/hemp control bill on Wednesday agreed to remove Section 3 of the draft law, which stipulates that cannabis and hemp were not considered narcotic substances under the Narcotics Act.

This raised questions about the status of the plant, but the Bhumjaithai Party, which sponsored the bill, and the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) insisted that axing Section 3 would not affect the rest of the bill.

That was certainly the majority of my intended itinerary, until I visited the country’s Monsoon Valley Vineyards and realized the country held an additional, unexpected appeal for me. Namely, Thai wine.

Outside of the bustling coastal city of Hua Hin, serene rolling hills give way to rows and rows of grapevines. The aroma of soy sauce and chillies omnipresent in Hua Hin’s streets is replaced by the dual scents of fresh air and ripe grapes. This lush, fragrant place is Monsoon Valley, the vineyard founded in 2001 by lead winemaker Suppached Sasomsin, now a leading producer of Thai wines.

After studying wine in France, Italy, and Spain, Sasomsin was inspired to develop viticulture in his native country, Thailand, where he recognized the bountiful potential for growing grapes. His first vineyard at Tab Kwang, in the country’s traditional grape-growing region of Khao Yai, was a success. He sought out other areas of Thailand with less of a reputation for wine and eventually found the Baan Khork Chang valley, just over 20 miles from the beaches of Hua Hin. Continued … 

TAT sees Chinese tourists returning soon

Outbound tourism from China is expected to restart during the Chinese New Year in late January 2023, as Beijing gradually lifts Covid-19 restrictions, aiding tourism-related stocks and the overall travel sector in Thailand, say industry operators.

Speaking at an event on Wednesday hosted by the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organizations (FETCO), Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Gov. Yuthasak Supasorn said the agency plans to promote Chinese travel to Thailand during the holiday next month, or within the first quarter at the latest.

“It is possible China will start to allow its citizens to travel outside the country as early as Chinese New Year. Hopefully, Thailand will be on a list of countries the Chinese government allows its people to visit,” he said. Continued … 

Where will Chinese tourists travel post-Covid?

The proportion of mainland Chinese travelers who are “eager to travel” as soon as they are allowed has more than doubled in the past year, according to a just-published survey.

Thailand renowned for high medical care standards at friendly rates among foreign tourists

The Ministry of Public Health has emphasized the potential benefits of its “Health for Wealth” concept in enhancing Thailand’s economy through medical tourism promotion.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that according to the Medical Tourism Assn., Thailand ranks 5th among the world’s most popular health tourism destinations in 2021. High medical care standards, quality treatments, reasonable rates, and affordable cost of living for long-term patients have made the kingdom one of the most popular medical destinations.

According to the Department of Health Service Support, a ministry survey conducted in collaboration with the Bank of Thailand (BOT) on 30 hospitals last year revealed that tourists who came for medical treatment spent around 11.9 billion baht. This represents a 47% increase over the previous year. The top five treatments generating the most revenue for hospitals were cardiovascular issues, metabolism, cancer, bones and joints, and neurological systems. Continued …

The peak of the Phuket tourism high season is expected from Christmas to New Year, as Russians lead the pack of visitors.

The president of the Southern Thai Hotels Assn., Sueksit Suwannadissakun, said, “Phuket tourism has improved since the beginning of October. About 57 percent of hotels in Phuket re-opened in October and in November this was 70 percent.

Marriott plans to open 8 more hotels in Thailand in 2023

On the heels of Thailand celebrating its milestone of 10 million tourist arrivals in 2022, Marriott International, Inc., announced on Tuesday plans that it expects to reach 50 hotels in the country by mid-2023, including adding an anticipated eight hotels in 2023.

Thai Airways is recruiting 1,000 workers for Suvarnabhumi

Thai Airways International is recruiting about 1,000 ground workers, mainly to tackle delays in luggage handling at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, its acting CEO Suvadhana Sibunruang said on Wednesday.

Suvadhana admitted that it took more than 30 minutes to handle one flight’s luggage at Suvarnabhumi airport earlier this year and that some flights were delayed due to slow luggage handling.

He said the carrier realizes this is an issue and is recruiting more staff to deal with it. About 1,000 positions are open at the carrier’s Suvarnabhumi operations. These are positions for ground services, including baggage handlers, drivers of vehicles in the airport, and kitchen staff, he said. Continued …
